Digitisation & ICT

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a crucial driver of global gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Over the past decade, the ICT sector has played a significant role in economic growth and development in Sub-Saharan Africa through entrepreneurship and innovation.

Digitisation & ICT

ICT is critical in Agriculture Development, Climate Change Adaptation, Education, Financial Services, Government Services and Health in developing African economies. ICT enhances African regional trade and integration, as well as the need to build a competitive ICT industry to promote innovation, job creation and the export potential of African companies.
Despite the rapid growth of ICT over the past two decades, Africa’s information and communications technology (ICT) landscape remains uneven, with most of the developmental progress occurring in just a handful of countries. From low mobile phone penetration rates to slow internet speeds and prohibitive data costs, the pace of development is inhibiting faster continental growth.

ICT’s role in economic and social development is part of the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals (SDG) for “decent work and economic growth” and “industry, innovation and infrastructure”. ICT is also entrenched in the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which calls for a highly connected continent to drive business, social and governance development. It is also a key enabler for reducing global inequality and achieving Agenda 2030’s other 15 goals. African countries and the world need to align themselves with modern developments by implementing the ICT infrastructure to achieve One Global Market/Economy.
